A shout-out to Canberra’s Ice Dragons, who set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance covered by dragon boat in 24hrs: 168.5km! It was reported to be a tough paddle, involving windy conditions, a cold dark night, turning into thick fog and ending at a hot 35degC. The team all made it through safely, and thank PDBC for their support and encouragement.
So we are the proud new holders of the torch, but we fully expect that when the snow and ice melt in Canada next spring, you guys will be back on the water reclaiming your former title. So thank you for being the first to set the benchmark, thank you for motivating us to take up the challenge, and we look forward to wishing you well on your next assault on the record. We hope this will mark the beginning of a friendly rivalry between our two clubs. Ice Dragons are very young and inexperienced compared to Pickering – your reputation precedes you on so many world stages – but we have a lot of respect for everything you have achieved and we hope to follow in your footsteps (wake) as far as we are able.
Best wishes from down under!

Ice Dragons
In July 2004, 22 members of the Pickering Dragon Boat Club paddled hard for 24hrs to establish a new Guinness World Record. This record is documented in the 2005 version of the Guinness Book of World Records.
On Nov 13th & 14th, Australia’s Canaberra Ice Dragons will make the world’s first attempt to break this record. Here are a few words of encouragement on behalf of our club:
Dear Ice Dragons,
You are about to embark on a journey that will test your skill, your strength and most importantly your spirit! The true test will not be in your individual pursuit of a goal but rather the collective will to support one another and the belief that you are supported by those beyond the gunnels of the boat. Please note that some of your greatest support will be coming from the shores of Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering, home of the current Guinness World Record holding Pickering Dragon Boat Club.
From our failing hands we throw this torch, be yours to hold it high!
Paddles Up!
