24HR Paddle
August 25th – 26th, 2012
On July 24-25, 2004, the Pickering Dragon Boat Club accomplished something that had never been achieved before. Setting the Guinness World Record for longest distance travelled in a dragon boat in 24hrs. In 2008 this record was eclipsed by a club in Australia. On August 25-26, 2012 the Pickering Dragon Boat Club plans to regain this record.
The key stipulation to setting this record is that only 1 crew of up to 22 members may be crew members of the record setting vessel during a specified 24hr period.
In 2012 the vision is to not only smash the existing World Record and establish a mark in excess of 200km’s but also to involve Pickering community members and Greater Toronto dragon boat racing community to be a part of this unique historical sporting event.
There are three ways to be involved:
1. Record Setting Athlete:
- You must be an experienced dragon boat paddler
- You must consult your physician and be cleared to participate
- You must be available for team functions from 9am August 25th to 3pm August 26th
- You must be dedicated to a team concept that will result in one of the most grueling yet memorable athletic experiences of your entire life
- All ‘record setting athletes’ must be fully registered and paid by August 1st, 2012.
- The plan is for all registered athletes to be placed on a record setting crew for the event on August 25th & 26th
- The organizing committee will establish crew lists from all registered ‘record setting athletes’ by August 10th.
- Email alex.hennig@pdbc.ca to register as a ‘Record Setting Athlete’
- Cost is $15 per athlete
2. On-Water Support:
- We are looking for Pickering community members and individual dragon boaters and dragon boat crews alike to be a part of this event by joining us on the water in ‘supporter boats’ throughout the 24hr period.
- No experience necessary
- Join as an individual or as a team
- Select the 2hr timeslot that suits you best. You even have the opportunity to paddle at night (as long as you meet minimum safety requirements)
- Email alex.hennig@pdbc.ca to register as an ‘On-Water Supporter (individual or crew)’ and request your desired 2hr paddling timeslot (12, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 am or pm)
- All ‘on-water supporters’ must be fully registered and paid by August 1st, 2012.
- Cost is $15 per athlete
3. Event Volunteer:
- We are looking to assemble a dryland and on-water volunteer support team to ensure important elements such as: health and safety, food and beverage and documentation and records management are accounted for throughout the event
- No experience necessary
- Email alex.hennig@pdbc.ca to register as an ‘Event Volunteer’ and indicate whether you prefer to be an on- water or dryland volunteer. Also please indicate your desired 4hr shift (12, 4, 8 am or pm)
- Note: on-water supporters may also be event volunteers. Simply volunteer before or after your scheduled on-water session
Free event t-shirt for all sponsors and volunteers!
Event Details:
Start: Saturday August 25th, noon
End:
Sunday August 26th, noon
Location: Progress East Frenchman’s Bay Park
Important Notes:
- Progress Clubhouse expected to be event headquarters for washrooms, health and safety and documentation and records management
- A special thanks to all paddlers and community members who will donate their time, energy and resources to contribute to this journey
