Pickering Dragon Boat Club Awarded Key to the City

Pickering, ON, January 14, 2013 Last Saturday, the City of Pickering awarded the Key to the City, the City's highest honour, to the Pickering Dragon Boat Club for its international-calibre accomplishments in 2012.

Last year, the Pickering Dragon Boat Club competed in the world championships in Hong Kong and came away with the second-highest medal count, with five gold, one silver, and four bronze. It is the only club in the world to have earned a medal in every single age category in the tournament’s history.

To cap off its dream season, the Club regained its Guinness World Record for distance travelled in a 24-hour span by paddling 214.9 kilometres – smashing the old record by nearly 40 kilometres.

In recognition of these extraordinary feats, the City organized a special ceremony at its annual Pickering Recreation Complex Open House to showcase the Pickering Dragon Boat Club in a public venue, and hopefully inspire others to live a more healthy and active lifestyle.

"As the City's highest honour, the Key to the City symbolizes the freedom of the recipient(s) to enter and leave the City at will as they have earned the unequivocal trust and respect of the residents," said Mayor Dave Ryan. "I am pleased that in addition to striving for international success, the Club is also committed to helping make our community healthier and stronger."
